This duplex for a family of four is located in Williamsburg, right on the east bank of the East River, with incredible views over the Manhattan skyline.
The scope of the project was to merge a new unit of 1,400 square feet into an existing apartment. This addition, to be used for a family room, playroom and guest bedroom, presented a challenge—it was one floor above on the 21st floor. To connect them we envisioned a light and sculptural spiral staircase at the center of it all. The new staircase, with walls in a dramatic shade of blue, works together with the colorful art by Mariah Robertson and a dramatic light sculpture by the Irish artist, Niamh Barry. The staircase and its opening allowed us to achieve the desired transparency and volume, giving the apartment a scale and flow befitting its new size.
Upstairs in the family room, the seating area looks outwards, taking full advantage of the amazing skyline. A concealed projector screen rolls down when it’s time for entertainment. Adjecent to this space, a whimsical wallpaper welcomes into the playroom. Vivid colors in textiles and furniture are combined with the smoked oak built-in millwork. Two bubble chairs hanging form the ceiling give the room a playful atmosphere, but serene enough to evolve as the kids grow up.
The kids’ bathrooms were also part of the renovation. The approach was to add a colorful mosaic floor, custom color-matched to the playful wallpaper. The mosaic floor and wallpaper are combined with more sober walnut millwork and light marble slabs, ensuring the design ages gracefully.
In the guest bedroom, a gold-tone wallpaper blends with sage, black and brass details, giving the space a warm and sophisticated feel.
